The Hug Poem by Tom Gunn

“Hearts on the Run” by Thom Gunn is a very nice, heartfelt and touching book of poetry. In this poem, Gunn is not afraid to bare his soul and express his feelings. He brings out the pain and suffering of a relationship that has been severed due to someone else’s actions and lack of consideration for the other person’s feelings.

It is an amazing feat that a writer of this caliber manages to bring tears to my eyes while at the same time making me laugh out loud with a sense of humor. I could cry from the depth of my heart just reading what Gunn has to say about the men and women in relationships.

The first time I read “Hearts on the Run” was right before I was on my first date with my now husband. It put me in the right frame of mind. I knew I needed to get away from the kids for a little while to work on my relationship with my husband. I also knew I had to make a hard decision whether or not to stay with my boyfriend or go on a date with someone else. This book definitely kept me in the right frame of mind.

Gunn starts off this collection of poems with, “I ran a marathon one day last March. I felt like running again.” The poem really starts off as a plea from one person to another.

“We’ll still be friends if we change our situation, and it worked.

You might have changed your mind if you’ve ever stopped and thought about how wonderful it feels to be loved, and running is one way to feel that love.” The sentiment in this part of the book is wonderful and it made me feel very good about myself. A big part of why I fell in love with my husband was because he loved me enough to let me know. “Runners up are people who keep running up despite the odds, until they come to a place where love is finally real.”

The next section is called “Love Takes Wing,” and it is a short piece of love quotes that talks about how love flourishes when we are afraid of failure or rejection. I liked this part of the book a lot because it reminds you to be bold and proud of your own self-confidence, even when you are afraid. The quote by William Wordsworth is, “There’s no fear in the heart of a woman but the fear of the world.” I agree with that sentiment, and that is what inspired me to write a Love Poem for Marry Gann.

“To be happy is the dream of every man, woman and child. But the heart of a woman must be filled with hope and trust.”

I realized after reading this poem that a lot of women don’t have a lot of faith in themselves. To me, that was the most inspiring part of the book, and I really learned a lot from reading it. There’s always hope in any situation, and it does not take much to encourage you to believe in yourself and your capabilities.

The last section of The Hug Poem by Tom Gunn is called “The Night We Left Behind.” It is a love story about two lovers who leave their comfortable, happy lives to run away from each other for the last time.

They both know that they will meet again, but they both hope that it will be for a different kind of occasion. It’s a beautiful love story that showcases both of their personalities. It also shows why it is important to keep good company.
